As an incredibly diverse college that also has a majority of women students, Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus is an ideal platform for guest speaker ALISON JAGGAR. A professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Jaggar is a leading feminist philosopher who will give an address titled “Saving Amina: Western Feminism and Global Responsibilities” today from 5 to 6 p.m. Margaret Cuonzo, chair of the Philosophy Department at the Brooklyn Campus, is one of the event organizers.
Jaggar’s discussion bases its title on Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman who conceived a child out of wedlock and was sentenced to death by stoning in 2002 by an Islamic Sharia court in northern Nigeria. Thanks to a high-profile campaign by international human rights organizations and Western media outlets, her conviction was overturned and her life was saved.
